Preseason/Tryout Expectations

soccer photoThe Cambridge Rindge & Latin Boys’ Soccer Program competes in the Dual County League, which is one of the most competitive high school leagues in Massachusetts. The demands that come from being a member of this league are very high and require student-athletes to hold themselves to a high level of excellence.

At the most basic level, our program’s mission is to teach community service. By accepting a role on a team, athletes serve that community and sacrifice for a purpose larger than themselves. With the full support of their families, the young men who participate in the CRLS Soccer Program will develop many important life skills that are learned through team sport and elite competition.

Below are the expectations that the coaching staff has created in order to make the CRLS Boys’ Soccer Program a program of excellence:

Growth Mindset
Athletes improve their craft through purposeful practice that requires hard work. In order to reach a Dual County League level of excellence, we expect those who are trying out to come into tryouts in optimal shape. We also expect that athletes will have dedicated a substantial amount of time to their technical and tactical abilities throughout the spring and summer in order to perform at the necessary skill level. Through this commitment, we believe athletes will have the opportunity to reach their full soccer potential.

Below is a highly recommended summer option to improve skill work:
Target Academy is a camp in Concord, MA that provides training twice a week starting in early June. The Commuter Rail leaving from Porter Sq. goes right through Concord Center, which will leave players a quick ten-minute walk to the fields at Concord Academy. Conditioning
The CRLS Off-Season Conditioning Program will be made available to all individuals who plan to tryout. All prospective candidates will be evaluated on their fitness and commitment level. The conditioning program is a good resource to meet the expectations.
  1. All prospective Junior Varsity/Varsity Players will be expected to pass the Gasser Test (8 Gassers each completed in :55 seconds or less). The conditioning program has a description of what a gasser is.
  2. All prospective Varsity Players will be expected to score a Level 100 on the Pacer Test. Pacer Test >>
If you want to make the team, you will need to put in the work!

Cuts/Tryouts
Over the past few seasons we have seen a large increase of players trying out for the Boys’ Soccer Program. (Over 100 players registered last year). As a result of having increased numbers we have had to make cuts at the Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. Making cuts is never an easy process and as a program we work hard to make sure all players who participate in the tryout receive an equal assessment. Our entire coaching staff meets to discuss player performance and provide input. No player is guaranteed a spot, and if you come into tryouts out of shape while others have come in prepared, you are at risk of losing your spot. The top 20-24 players in the program will be selected for the Varsity team. Sub Varsity teams will not exceed 25 players. (JV and Freshmen)

Attendance
The soccer season runs from August 19, 2024 until the end of the state tournament in November. In order for the program to achieve a high level of excellence the families of the players need to make every effort to support the players by accommodate the soccer program schedule. All athletes are expected to attend all tryouts, practices, and games.
