Modern Dance Company – Update

Modern Dance Company – Update
Posted on 12/14/2015
In addition to preparing for our January DanceWorks show, the CRLS Modern Dance Program has been busy working on some exciting projects!

Damon and MDCAt the recent CRLS Falcon Pride Day, the CRLS Modern Dance Company presented a hip hop dance choreographed by CRLS alum Junior Cius (2010). We were lucky to have a special guest dancer for this piece – our very own principal, Damon Smith! He did a great job learning and performing this tricky dance, and is now an honorary member of MDC! The crowd went wild seeing their principal dance! Here's a photo of Damon and the "cast!"

Last week, five of our members were featured in “Gumdrops & the Funny Uncle” choreographed by Peter Dimuro and presented at the Dance Complex in Central Square. This piece featured a multi-generational cast, and our students Emma Beaumont-Smith, Caroline Daley, Mariah Goldsmith, Annalise Slate and Ariel Vilcina-Brown had a wonderful time working with this expert choreographer.

MDCFinally, CRLS Modern Dance Company was invited to perform with New York City's David Parker/The Bang Group in their production of “Nut/Cracked” at the Institute for Contemporary Arts in Boston on December 20th. Here's a photo of MDC rehearsing with The Bang Group's Jeffrey Kazin.

Here's a little info on the show:
'Nut/Cracked,' The Bang Group's beloved, witty response to 'The Nutcracker,' has delighted audiences for more than a decade. 'Nut/Cracked' takes its inspiration from all corners of the dance canon, from tap riffs to en pointe ballet, by way of bubble wrap, disco, and Chinese take-out noodles (consumed en pointe!). Choreographer David Parker finds beauty in the ridiculous, waltzing us through many incarnations of Tchaikovskyís score, including versions by Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, as well as the traditional orchestral suite. You'll never watch 'The Nutcracker' in quite the same way again! Learn more >>
