Glocal ChallengeThe Glocal Challenge has returned to CRLS! For the third year, Education First has partnered with Cambridge Rindge and Latin to provide an excellent educational model bridging the gap between business and academia.

Cambridge was recently voted the 6th greenest city in America. The students were challenged to come up with a plan to make Cambridge the greenest city by 2020. Specifically, students were asked to identify a local environmental issue, research a global solution, adapt the solution for our community and then design a quantifiable plan for implementation.

Glocal ChallengeOver 150 students took up the challenge and after the initial round of judging, four final teams presented to a panel of distinguished judges. Thanks to the generosity of Education First and the City of Cambridge each sponsoring a team, the top two teams won a trip to Costa Rica for the EF Global Student Leaders Summit this spring. The winning teams are The Cambridge Gridworks and L.E.A.V.E.S. comprised of members Emily Chan, Lizzie Downing, Kabir Singh, Paloma O’Connor and Josué Marquez, Nicholas Singer, Eleanor McCartney, Nathaniel Quigley, Manuel Bonder. Cambridge Gridworks came up with a plan to put the City of Cambridge on a smart grid in order to conserve and manage electricity useage. L.E.A.V.E.S. worked on installing green roofs on all the new buildings in Cambridge while retrofitting existing roofs to be converted into urban rooftop gardens. To read their own brief descriptions of their projects, please see the write ups below.

The support of Education First, the City of Cambridge, several local businesses and the CRLS administration made this a truly meaningful learning process for all the students involved. Several of the teams not mentioned here have already taken steps to implement their plans. For example, The Green Lanterns, consisting of Sam Denney, Chris Matsko, Karalynn Ojeda-Pollard, Ehasanuzzaman Satu and Arthur Girard, have already received a generous commitment from NSTAR to donate smart power strips to CRLS to help conserve energy consumption within the building. The energy and money saved have the potential to save the school tens of thousands of dollars each year!
