CRLS Underwater Robotics Team Comes in 2nd in the New England Regional Competition
Posted on 05/13/2015
On May 9th, the CRLS Underwater Robotics Team earned 2nd place at the MATE New England Regional Underwater Robotics competition. Held at UMass Dartmouth, teams from all over New England competed in a simulated Arctic Oil and Gas exploration mission where their Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) had to complete a complex series of mission tasks in only 20 minutes in the pool. The CRLS Underwater Robotics Team came away with a very respectable 65 points from the pool mission and combined with scores from a Technical Report, an Engineering Presentation to professional engineers, and a Technical Poster it was enough to secure a well deserved 2nd place overall. Team members have been working on designing effective engineering solutions to the mission specifications since early in the school year and with a young and inexperienced team there has been a lot of learning from our mistakes. New to the team design this year is a complex digital code used to control the ROV’s ability to fly in a 3D environment with a joystick interface. Also employed this year is a new design for a manipulator arm that has the ability to move in 2 planes to allow the ROV to reach out and grab and move items as required.

The team is very excited to build on this year’s success and is reaching out to anyone who would like to join us for next year’s mission. You don’t need any experience, just need to be creative and enjoy hands on projects.

Congrats to all the team members for an amazing performance and result.
