Dear Parents/Guardians of Sophomore and Juniors:

On Wednesday, October 10, 2018 CRLS will be administering the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT)/ National Merit Qualifying Test. This exam is given once a year and is offered at no cost to all sophomores and juniors for the following reasons:

  1. The PSAT provides practice and an estimate of the scores that each student can expect to receive on the SAT exams given in the spring of their junior year.

  2. The results of this test are received in December and provide students with comprehensive score report outlining their strengths and areas to improve. Students receive an access code to link their PSAT scores to Khan Academy for a free personalized online SAT preparation.

  3. Junior Year Only – The PSAT/NMSQT provides entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions and other recognition programs such as the National Hispanic Recognition program.

The regular timed exam with pre-administration is expected to last about 3 ½ hours. Students with College Board approved accommodations of 50% extended time should expect the test to last about 5 hours and those approved for 100% extended time should expect the test to last about 6 hours 25 minutes. It is important students report to school on time as the College Board will not allow students to enter a test session once testing begins.

Study guides were distributed to all sophomores and juniors during community meeting on September 17.

On the day of the test, students should, eat breakfast, bring water and a light snack such as a granola bar and report to school promptly. Students should bring #2 pencils and a calculator. A scientific, graphing or any four-function calculator is permitted. Students are unable to use calculators with a keyboard, pocket organizer, smart watches, laptops, electronic devises, or cell phones as calculators.

Parents who have questions may go online or can contact their child's guidance counselor.

Sincerely,

Lynn Williams
