Favorite subject at CRLS
Science

Why is it your favorite subject?
Science has always been my favorite subject because it not only allows us to understand the origins and current functioning of our world, but is also a valuable tool that allows us to shape the future. This has only become more apparent during the pandemic, where speedy vaccine development allowed us to adapt and create a world where we can relatively safely coexist with COVID. The ever-present potential of discovery and the continuous drive for invention is what has me hooked to science.

Favorite CRLS Staff Person
Ms. Augustine, Mr. SebellShavit, Ms. Newton, Ms. Divelbliss

What makes that staff person so special?

Ms. Augustine’s classes have been some of the most memorable courses I have taken at CRLS because she injects so much enthusiasm into her lessons. Her classes are filled with engaging stories, creative projects, and unique activities that can brighten even the most dull January day. I have loved taking classes with Mr. SebellShavit because he is not only incredibly passionate about what he teaches, but makes communication a priority. I appreciate how much effort he puts into creating an open classroom environment and making sure that no one is left out of the discussion. As a club advisor, Ms. Newton goes above and beyond in helping her students achieve their goals and find their passions outside school. She has dedicated countless hours both after school and on weekends to helping foster a tight-knit community, and Science Team is truly lucky to have her as a mentor. Last but not least, throughout my four years of high school, Ms. Divelbliss has been an amazingly supportive teacher and I appreciate how much she cares about her students well-being, both in and outside of the classroom.

What were some of the out-of-school time (O.S.T) programs that you participated in anytime between grades 6-12?
N/A

How did being enrolled in any O.S.T. program(s) contribute to your success both in and out of high school?
N/A

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
One of the most amazing things about CRLS is how many extra curricular opportunities are available to students. Ranging from sports and clubs to volunteering and internships, there really is something for everyone. A big part of high school is figuring out your passions and interests, and CRLS makes it easy to do that by getting involved in the school community.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
The Rindge School of Technical Arts (RSTA) program is one of the best opportunities at CRLS because it allows you to explore and/or refine your career aspirations, which is something that is not always explicitly taught or made a priority in regular courses. I came into high school knowing I love science, but the RSTA Biotechnology classes reinforced that passion through their interactive and hands-on style of learning. The resulting skillset later helped me secure a summer internship at a local biotech start-up. I therefore recommend taking a RSTA class during freshman year.

What advice would you give incoming freshmen about CRLS?
Do not feel pressured to participate in a million extra curricular activities and do things because they will “look good for college.” Trying to do everything fragments your time, and you end up overwhelmed, burn-out and with a feeling of not fully accomplishing anything. The results are so much more rewarding when you fully commit your time to a few activities that you genuinely love.
