Favorite subject at CRLS
History

Why is it your favorite subject?
I love studying history not only because it is fascinating to learn about the stories of the past and how they have shaped us, but also because it is constantly relevant to what is happening around us today. I have also never taken a history class at CRLS that was not incredibly interesting and engaging.

Favorite CRLS Staff Person
Ms. Giacchino, Ms. Williams-Giordano, and Ms. Read

What makes that staff person so special?

I have had so many wonderful teachers at CRLS, but these three have truly shaped my high school experience. Ms. Giacchino made studying Latin for five semesters as worthwhile and enjoyable as it was challenging, and I really enjoyed being her teaching assistant this fall. Taking AP U.S. Government with Ms. Williams-Giordano helped me realize that I wanted to pursue studying government, and she always made what we were learning about come alive through activities like mock congressional hearings and election simulations. Last but not least, Ms. Read has been such a wonderful and supportive CM teacher, helping me navigate both the college application process and life at CRLS as a whole.

Extracurricular activities, clubs, school-related activities

The Register Forum, History Club, Latin Club, Course Connect Mentoring, Freshmen Mentoring, and National Honors Society. Outside of school, I also practice and teach taekwondo.

What were some of the out-of-school time (O.S.T) programs that you participated in anytime between grades 6-12?
Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program

How did being enrolled in any O.S.T. program(s) contribute to your success both in and out of high school?
My first work experience was through the Mayor's Program, and it was a great opportunity to experience holding a job and navigating the workforce. I really appreciate the people I met and the valuable skills I was able to develop through the program.

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
What I like most about CRLS is that there are so many ways to individualize your high school experience and really make it want you want to make it. There is such an amazing variety of classes and clubs (some of my best memories from CRLS are from the many hours spent doing layout at the Register Forum), as well as more specific opportunities that are really worthwhile if they interest you, like being a teaching assistant. Additionally, there are a lot of amazing teachers who are not only passionate about their subject matter, but also care deeply about their students.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
CRLS has so many opportunities, but it is crucial to take initiative and seek them out. Not everything will just fall into your lap, but if you advocate for yourself, there are plenty of people who are willing and ready to support you. Also, the building seems really overwhelming at first, but you will figure out your way around the different zones in no time.

What advice would you give incoming freshmen about CRLS?
First, take a deep breath, because you are going to be okay. Then, say hi to the person you sit next to, join some clubs, and before long, you will find your place and your community here at CRLS. Do not be afraid to make new friends and also to ask for help when you need it, as your teachers and guidance counselors are there to help you make the most of these four years. And do try to make the most of them, because those four years will go by much faster than you can imagine!
