Favorite subject at CRLS
AP Biology & Astronomy
Why is it your favorite subject?
AP Bio:
Outside of biology being my favorite subject, I really enjoyed my time in this class. The labs, especially the Amgen lab we did, were some of the best I’ve ever done. It is a great class regarding the pacing and the content learned. The class reinforced and deepened my interest and fascination with molecular cell biology
Astronomy:
As someone pursuing a space science, I knew I wanted to take this class if possible. It is an amazing introduction to what I need to know for my future studies, and it teaches you a lot about basic astronomy that you can not learn in other classes. I was captivated by how both the history of astronomy and its new discoveries reflect who we are as humans.
Favorite CRLS Staff Person
Ms. Arocho, Mr. SebellShavit (Mr. S), Mr. Gupta
What makes that staff person so special?
Ms. Arocho was my AP Bio teacher and she is really one of the reasons my passion for biology grew the way it did. From the way she incorporated her own stories and knowledge into our learning, to how she made sure people understood the content, I loved learning from her.
Mr. S was my Astronomy teacher, but more than anything he was a great advisor. I always felt like I could talk to him about everything, or he could help me figure out problems I was having. I also never felt like I did not know a subject because he always sought to help us understand the content.
Mr. Gupta was my Honors Chemistry teacher, but he was also the teacher that helped me when I was studying for the AP Chemistry exam. I was not able to take the class, so Mr. Gupta helped me learn during his office hours and gave me work to do that prepared me for the exam. He went above and beyond to make sure I felt confident in my knowledge.
Extracurricular activities, clubs, school-related activities
In School: CRLS Women’s Soccer, CRLS Women’s Crew, Model UN Outside of School: Harvard-Smithsonian Science Research Mentoring Program, Münchner Tafel, Good Trouble
What were some of the out-of-school time (O.S.T) programs that you participated in anytime between grades 6-12?
N/A
How did being enrolled in any O.S.T. program(s) contribute to your success both in and out of high school?
N/A
What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
What I liked most about CRLS was the fact that I was able to choose my own path from an earlier age than I could have at other schools. There are so many different elective classes that wouldn’t exist at other schools like astronomy, and being at CRLS gave me the opportunity to explore what I wanted to do. It is especially useful for teaching independence at preparing you to decide what classes you might want to take in college.
What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
CRLS operates on a block schedule, which means that we have four 85-minute classes every day for each semester (around 8 classes total per year). I think it is something that takes some getting used to, especially balancing homework with outside activities, but can be really beneficial to learning. That being said, language classes are considerably harder if you can not get them in consecutive semesters.
What advice would you give incoming freshmen about CRLS?
There are a lot of hidden gems at CRLS from teachers to classes to clubs and more. I would encourage students to not limit themselves to the most popular classes or clubs, but instead take the time to look through the catalog or club fair and make sure they are choosing things they would enjoy.
