Favorite subject at CRLS
Brain and Behavior
Why is it your favorite subject?
This class was my favorite because of what we learned and the way we learned. We learned a lot about the human body, not only the Brain that normal Biology class usually brushes over. I took this class because of my interest in Exercise Science and Physical Therapy. The brain is a huge part in maintaining everything in the human body and I really enjoyed learning a lot about it. Ms. Jerome is also a great teacher, who made a very rigorous class like Brain and Behavior extremely interesting.
Favorite CRLS Staff Person
Mr. Porreca
What makes that staff person so special?
Freshman year he was one of my English teachers and Senior Year I TA'd for one of his classes. From the start of my high school career to the end Mr. Porreca has been someone I could always rely on and ask questions too. He is funny, helpful, and gives great support/praise that extremely helped me throughout high school.
Extracurricular activities, clubs, school-related activities
TIAA (Title IX Aurelia Advocates), CRLS Baseball team, CRLS Indoor Track Team, Club 4, and Black Student Union
What were some of the out-of-school time (O.S.T) programs that you participated in anytime between grades 6-12?
Math Playbook (Young People's Project) 6th-12th grade, Summer Food Program (Cambridge Rec)
How did participating in any sports, arts, clubs and/or OST programs contribute to your success during your high school years?
I think all my extra curricular activities did not contribute to my success, they were my success. I find more pride in all the work I have put in outside the classroom, then work in class. I express who I really am and what I really stand for through my extra curricular. Whether it's my leadership abilities being a Captain of both the Track and Baseball team, or my drive for social justice with TIAA, and lastly my love for giving back to the community with Summer Food Program and Club 4. Participating in extracurricular is what made high school so amazing and what continues to push me to be better.
What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
CRLS is a wonderful place with a lot of great things. I would say my favorite thing about CRLS was the diversity every student experiences in the hallways. Personally, I have friends from almost everywhere in the world, which allows me to learn stories, food, culture, and norms from a lot of different groups of people. Leaving high school I take pride in being able to know so many diverse people, it gives me a wider scope of the world that someone who isn't from Cambridge wouldn't know. It prepares me for what life is like and will help me to relate to many groups of people in my future endeavors.
What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
CRLS is not like the normal High School movies, everyone in the building is somewhat welcoming and no one should be afraid to be themselves. Lots of younger students I talk to think CRLS is some scary place with bullies, jocks, and overall bad people. In contrast CRLS is not like that, everyone is welcoming and you should not be afraid to be yourself!
What advice would you give incoming freshmen about CRLS?
Work hard, stay humble, and don't get too satisfied with small successes. It will slow you down. Grades are important, your mental health and well being is more important, put yourself first every step of the way.
