Murphy has served as Interim Superintendent of Schools in Cambridge since July 2024.

Cambridge, MA – October 6, 2025 - The Cambridge School Committee voted this evening to select David G. Murphy as the next Superintendent of the Cambridge Public Schools.

In a special meeting on Monday, the School Committee accepted public comment before deliberating and ultimately voting to offer the position to Mr. Murphy. In the preceding weeks, Murphy and two other finalist candidates - Dr. Lorenco Garcia, of Revere, and Magaly Sanchez, of Boston - participated in a series of site visits, community forums, and public interviews prior to Monday’s vote. Mr. Murphy currently serves as the Interim Superintendent of CPS, a position he has held since July 2024.

The School Committee conducted the national search in partnership with The Equity Process, an organization that supports school systems by coaching senior and school-based leaders, delivering high-quality professional development, and facilitating executive searches that prioritize diverse and highly qualified candidates, through advancing equity-focused hiring practices, and helping schools build and assess inclusive systems that improve outcomes for students and families.

“I am grateful for the vote of confidence in the work our team is doing represented by tonight’s vote. To a person, the individuals of the Cambridge School Committee with whom I have worked, both past and present, have focused on the well-being of our students,” Mr. Murphy said. “I am humbled by the responsibility to lead this district and will continue to do so with the best interests of our students in mind.”

As Interim Superintendent, Mr. Murphy led the Cambridge Public Schools through a leadership transition that has included the closure of a school, the implementation of a universal preschool program, an inclusive budget development process, the continuation of an expanded learning program at multiple CPS schools, and the finalization of multiple collective bargaining processes related to each. Mr. Murphy completed and brought to publication a multi-year process for the development of a long-term facilities condition assessment establishing a series of capital improvement priorities at multiple CPS facilities.

Before coming to Cambridge, Mr. Murphy served for over a decade in positions of leadership in public education. He was the Assistant Superintendent for the Medford Public Schools, Chief of Staff, Deputy Superintendent and Labor Counsel for the Boston Public Schools, strategic planning advisor to the Superintendent of the Lowell Public Schools and the Chair of the Attleboro School Committee.

Mr. Murphy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and his law degree, cum laude, from Boston College Law School.
