Purchases made on April 6th to directly benefit non-profit association

Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FoCRLS), a nonprofit association dedicated to enriching academic and social development opportunities at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS), is partnering with four local Whole Foods Market stores to raise funds for and awareness of future opportunities at the city's only public high school.

All three Cambridge Whole Foods Markets, located on Prospect Street, River Street, and Alewife Brook Parkway (Fresh Pond), as well as the Somerville Whole Foods Market on Beacon Street, will participate in 5% Day for Friends of CRLS on Wednesday, April 6. Five percent of all purchases made at these stores on April 6th will benefit students and faculty of CRLS through FoCRLS's six programs: Scholarships, Student Travel Fellowships, Faculty Innovation Grants, the "It Takes a Village" College Success Program, Unsung Heroes Awards, and Faculty Distinction Awards.

Proceeds will reward achievement and ease the impending financial burden of college for graduating seniors, facilitate student participation in domestic and international educational trips, enable teachers to bring creative learning experiences to their classrooms, and make many other CRLS opportunities possible: for example, the funding of an in-school food pantry for CRLS students and their families.

The organization estimates that 1 out of every 60 Cambridge residents is currently a CRLS student (1,800+ students out of 107,000+ residents), and nearly half of CRLS students are from low income families.  Whole Foods shoppers on April 6th will be investing in the current and future health and vitality of our youth and our community.

Since 2007, FoCRLS, a 501(c)3 nonprofit association, has raised over $600,000 for the high school by engaging many sectors of the Cambridge Community, including its businesses. In addition to the Whole Foods 5% Day,  a new and successful "100 by 100" Cambridge Business Community Scholarship Fund consisting of 60 business sponsors, will, for the first time this spring, award $10,000 in college scholarships for student achievement in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics scholarships to members of the CRLS Class of 2016.
