This is the image for the news article titled Cambridge Rindge and Latin School will present The Drowsy Chaperone for Three performances ONLY! Students from the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School proudly present this year’s fall musical: The Drowsy Chaperone.

Following its 1998 debut at the Toronto Fringe Festival, The Drowsy Chaperone ran on Broadway and the West End in London in 2006-2007. It is beloved for its campy yet relatable book, written by Bob Martin & Don McKellar, and snappy music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison.

Under the direction of Monica Murray, with technical direction by Joanne Farwell, this “musical within a comedy” follows a man in a chair (character name: Man in Chair) experiencing “a little self-conscious anxiety resulting in non-specific sadness.” In an attempt to cheer himself up, Man in Chair invites the audience to join him in listening to the record of his favorite 1928 musical, fictional The Drowsy Chaperone. While superfan Man in Chair continues to break the fourth wall by explaining the story, pointing out favorite (and cringe-inducing) moments, and sharing fun facts about the production, the rest of the cast brings the musical to life.

In both a parody of and love letter to Jazz Age musicals, rollicking The Drowsy Chaperone (the musical) centers around the wedding of oil tycoon Robert Martin and starlet Janet Van De Graaff, who plans to give up her stage career for marriage. With implications and high stakes for every supporting character, the action that ensues delights the audience through classic theater tropes such as mistaken identities, sabotage, suspicious bakers (or are they gangsters?), blindfolded roller-skating, a surprise ending, and plenty of glitz and glamor.

While unmistakingly silly and over-the-top, The Drowsy Chaperone also leaves audiences with a clear message of the power of musical theater to deliver comfort and soothe our souls.

The Drowsy Chaperone is presented in one act, with an intermission, and runs about 90 minutes. It is appropriate for all ages.
