Graduation Update from Principal Smith

Graduation Update from Principal Smith
Posted on 05/18/2020
Dear Students and Families in the CRLS Class of 2020,

I am writing to update the CRLS community on plans being developed to celebrate and acknowledge students graduating in the Class of 2020.

A planning committee has been established to develop ideas and ceremonies for the Class of 2020. Consisting of CRLS parents, Student Government leaders, the Parent and Caregiver Liaison, teachers, administrators and facilitated by Assistant Principal Tynes, the group is finalizing the development of a virtual graduation ceremony, and is also working on other celebratory events for the Class of 2020. Please see below for information regarding virtual activities and other events.

CRLS Class of 2020 Virtual Commencement Ceremony: Thursday, June 11th at 6PM
The last day of classes for the Class of 2020 is May 29th. Graduation exercises were originally set for June 4th, but due to matters related to the public health crisis, CRLS will conduct a virtual commencement ceremony on Thursday, June 11th. Graduates in the class will have their name announced and a photo displayed during the pre recorded ceremony. The ceremony will feature musical selections, speeches, and presentations of the CRLS Faculty of Distinction Awards. Commencement will be streamed on the CRLS website and broadcast on local access channels 98 and 99.

Caps and gowns will be provided by the school. Along with the caps and gowns, CRLS diplomas, diploma covers, and graduation programs will be delivered to student home addresses before the ceremony. A few weeks ago, communication was sent regarding cap and gown sizes. If you have not done so already, please submit the requested information as soon as possible so that the correct cap and gown size will be ordered for you. Additionally, in order to list your name in the program and post images, we must have a media release form on file. If you believe you do not have the form on file, please complete this consent form.

Class of 2020 Celebration Experiences
The planning committee, along with other CRLS staff and community members, are developing additional ways to celebrate the Class of 2020 in the days leading up to the Virtual Commencement ceremony. Please see the ideas currently in development -
  • CRLS will sponsor a Virtual Senior Prom hosted on a social media platform in the days before Commencement. Following the Commencement ceremony, a post-graduation virtual party will also be sponsored.
  • Banners congratulating the Class of 2020 are being developed to be displayed in locations throughout Cambridge in the days leading up to the Commencement ceremony.
  • Two other festivities are being developed and, once confirmed, will be shared with the community as well.
In Person Ceremony
While we are excited for the Virtual Commencement ceremony and the other activities, nothing compares to the experience of walking across the stage to receive your diploma in front of peers and loved ones. Although we are limited in our ability to conduct an in- person ceremony presently, we do not want our students in the Class of 2020 to miss out on this experience. So, our school is committed to holding an in person event for the Class of 2020 at a time when social distancing practices and public health guidelines permit us to do so.

There is much to be done between now and June 11th to prepare for these events and the committee and others are working hard to make these events exciting and engaging for the class. Updates from CRLS administrators will be provided weekly leading up to Commencement. Please access this link, if necessary, to share questions or perspectives about these developments.

You may also email CRLS main office clerks Sandy Stone and Yemisi Oluwole with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Principal Smith
