Former Mayor Hodges stressed the importance of service in the building of a good life. “Service literally saved my life.” She applauded Dottin-Carter’s tenacity and leadership and called upon all the members in the room to commit to service. “Reaching out to people, seeing what they need, and how you can help, you might think it is helping others, but I’m telling you it is also the way towards a better life for you.”

april and mayorThe annual award honors a Boston or Cambridge junior or senior who has demonstrated leadership in the area of service and engaging participation. At the end of April’s speech, she concluded with, “I am so grateful to be recognized for my actions. Often, I am given accolades for my academic accomplishments, but tonight to be recognized for how I’ve impacted the community with my knowledge, this award means the most to me.” April was recognized because of the work she has done to create YES, Youth Entrepreneurship Society, chapters in the Boston area. Starting the summer after her freshman year April was looking for a way to expand her own capacity and engage other motivated students in entrepreneurship when she and a few other high schoolers founded YES, an organization that wants to help young people become changemakers through inventive strategies and product design. Since she started she’s supported the launch of 4 chapters including one at CRLS with the support of Business Ed teacher Mr. Larry Rubin. April runs Tuesday morning entrepreneurship classes to help students get started. She has a strong belief that young people with knowledge of financial literacy and the process of getting ideas into the marketplace will help change the world.
