Overview
Membership in the Derry-Wood Chapter of the National Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by the CRLS National Honor Society Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities. 



In order to continue membership in the NHS, seniors are required to complete an additional 40 hours of community service (5 of these hours must be helping with an NHS sponsored event), attend regularly scheduled meetings and participate in designated NHS activities. In addition, they will need to maintain their academic eligibility and submit an endorsement from their dean of students in order to graduate as a member of the NHS.



Selection Process
To be eligible for membership candidates must:

  • Be a member of the junior or senior class. 
  • Have been in attendance at CRLS for 3 semesters 
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 87% with no grade below a 70%
  • Provide evidence of 40 hours of community service completed outside of school hours
  • Have complied with all civil laws and school discipline codes
  • Have excellent attendance

In the fall, juniors and seniors with 87% GPA, excellent attendance and no disciplinary infractions will be invited to submit an application to join the CRLS chapter of NHS. In this application, the student will provide evidence of community service, character and leadership. Applicants will also be asked to submit a teacher recommendation and write an essay. 

The application packets and more information will be distributed to eligible students in September. The NHS Faculty Council will carefully review each application and, by majority vote of the Faculty Council, invite qualified applicants to join. The induction ceremony will take place in December.

Scholarship: To be eligible for membership the candidate must be a member of the junior class. Candidates must have a GPA average of 87% on a 100% scale. Grade point average will not be rounded to meet the minimum requirement.

This scholastic average for juniors will be based on their freshman, sophomore, and first semester junior year averages. Students can have no course grades below a 70% to have academic eligibility. Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Character: A candidate must have complied with all civil laws and school discipline. The applicant will need the endorsement of the dean of students as well as a recommendation from a teacher who knows him/her well.

Community Service: All applicants must provide evidence of having completed 40 hours of community service. Community service is defined as any work for which no monetary or academic credit has been given. Community service performed during the summer can be counted. Leadership: The applicant will have to complete documentation regarding his/her leadership accomplishments in school or community related activities. The candidate will also be required to submit an essay of 200-500 words.

All applications and supporting documentation will be carefully reviewed and considered by the NHS Faculty Council. Applicants who meet the above criteria will be selected and notified accordingly. The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council.
