Favorite Class at CRLS
Psychology and Sociology. I am someone who is fascinated with how our world works in a social web and what it all really means. So naturally those two classes were a good fit for me and even more so by having amazing teachers teaching these two classes. Sociology and psychology were also mostly discussion based classes which is the most effective learning environment for me.

Favorite Teacher
Ms. Lozada and Mr. McGuinness

Ms. Lozada is a teacher who truly embodies everything she stands for. She was not only a teacher for me but also a friend and mentor. She was a teacher I could always go to and who brought out the best in me. I have never met someone who is so passionate about seeing every single one of her students succeed and also so determined to get people to learn what they truly are passionate about. She has inspired me to truly explore the world of activism with subjects like slut shaming and transgender awareness.

Mr. McGuinness is a teacher that is so passionate about what he is teaching that even if you have no interest in Marine Biology, you will by the end of the semester. He is someone that I have been lucky enough to be able to go on a school trip to the Galapagos Islands with. Through this experience I was able to see him as an amazing teacher and awesome leader.

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
I think something we emphasize a lot at CRLS is the vast majority of opportunities we have but not everyone fully knows what extent that goes to. One thing that amazes me is CRLS’s ability to let students’ voices be heard and be able to let them take a stance as members of not only the CRLS community but also the wider Cambridge community. We not only have so many opportunities to offer, but also we create many opportunities that have been started by students that our staff let them create.

For me personally I’ve been able to be an activist through STAR’s with the support of Ms. Lozada right by my side. Through this experience with my two years taking the class I was able to lead workshops on transgender awareness and slut shaming in which I was able to have amazing open conversations afterwards. I don’t think this is something you get at your average public high school, especially with such controversial subjects.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
The learning environment that CRLS has for students and also the resources CRLS has for students who are struggling. Most teachers I’ve had are so welcoming and willing to help me succeed in my classes and I think these ideals go along with everything our school stands for.

I think another thing that is not always noticed is the teen health center and what resources it can really provide for students with different types of contraception, therapy and even acupuncture!

Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Take advantage of all the opportunities and classes CRLS has to offer. Choose your classes based off what you’re interested in/what level you feel comfortable with, not what your friends want you to take or what level you feel pressured to take by others.
