Favorite Class at CRLS
English. I’m a literature addict, so having the opportunity to read and discuss and dissect challenging texts in the classroom is incredible.

Favorite Teacher
Deborah Haverty. Prodigious teaching abilities aside, Mrs. Haverty demonstrates an unusual devotion to the well-being of her students. She cares deeply and legitimately about all of us; she rejoices over our triumphs and laments our failures and recognizes our potential as artists. She knows just when to push her students and when to lead the way. (Also, she bakes a mean cake.)

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
I think it’s awesome that a sufficiently determined student can find a way to follow any passion, no matter how unusual, here at CRLS. The variety of activities and clubs is staggering—and if the club you’re looking for doesn’t exist yet, it’s possible to start your own. That kind of freedom is not something you can find at any run-of-the-mill high school.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
I think there are a lot of people out there who are scared off by the idea of public schools; I can’t speak to the quality of other public institutions in this country, but I can say with confidence that CRLS is an extraordinary place to learn. The school has a dedicated and talented teaching staff, excellent academic and extracurricular resources, and a wonderfully diverse student body.

Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Visit your LC office early and often! Your guidance counselor is an extraordinary resource; reach out to him or her your freshman year and keep in touch, even if you don’t have any specific issues to discuss. Make sure he or she knows who you are, and what you like to do; this relationship will be invaluable later in your high school career when you start the college process. Plus, you might find out that your counselor is super cool and friendly and worth talking to.
