Favorite Class at CRLS
English. I never expected that I would get so much more out of English class than just reading great novels. I learned to think critically and analyze the world around me. The best thing about English is that it makes small things big; it takes one sentence from one novel and examines how that reflects our modern society, or the psychological state of the author, or the author’s message in relation to feminism. At CRLS, a book was never just a book, and I was taught to think globally.

Favorite Teacher
Dr. Parker a.k.a. DParkz. Dr. Parker gave me my first really bad grade, and then taught me that that was okay. Her English 10 class was the hardest class I took at Rindge (besides maybe Calculus) and her Lit class was no joke either. She taught me about the growth mindset instead of the fixed mindset, which was a big deal for me. We had the best conversations in her class, because she allowed her students to argue against her, and draw their own conclusions, which I think is really rare in a teacher. I read the best books I have ever read in her class. But best of all, one day in Lit we all brought in cupcakes and tea and we had a book talk with cupcakes and tea! It was a dream come true.

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
I love the people! The teachers are so thoughtful and ready to argue with their students. I like being surrounded by people who have a realistic and critical view of the world, and there are tons of those people at CRLS. Conversations are never boring. It’s going to be very odd to go to a different school, and I don’t think it’s possible to find somewhere that will give me the same experience I had here.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
I just think it’s so wild how much stuff we have going on at CRLS. There’s something for everyone. There’s no way you can avoid getting involved, or meeting people who like what you like. I think that speaks both to the opportunities we have and the diversity within our student body. Also, CRLS has got to be the most accepting high school I know.

Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Take at least one class per semester that you think is too hard for you. It probably won’t be as scary as you think. And learn how to ask for help early on; it’s always worth it. I lived in the tutoring center junior year, and I lived to see senior year!
