Favorite Class at CRLS
Computer Science (CS). Before Mr. McGlathery’s AP CS class, computer science was this unknown area to me that felt difficult to explore on my own. Now, having taken the class and his machine learning elective, I have realized how much I enjoy the subject and how versatile programming can be. It’s a tool that can be used to do anything from predicting the effects of climate change to producing art. CS problems can seem really complex, but Mr. McGlathery taught us to break them down step by step and think about them logically. He also has a way of making programming so fun and engaging, so I highly recommend getting taking one (or more!) of his classes. Plus, there is nothing more satisfying than getting the code you have been working on for hours to finally work as intended!

Favorite Teacher
Mr. SebellShavit
. Throughout my four years at Rindge, Mr. S has been my community meeting teacher, physics teacher, and club advisor. From my very first day of high school, Mr. S made me feel comfortable and welcome. I have always thought of him as such a genuine person who cares deeply about his students and wants the best for them. Whether it was my physics homework or the astronomy club’s rocket launches, Mr. S has always been there to lend a hand. I am grateful for his continuous support and kindness!

I would also like to thank Ms. Arocho for showing me how fun biology can be, Mr. Patterson for being such a wonderful math teacher, Mr. Jordan for the compelling philosophical discussions, Mr. MacLaury for encouraging me to stand up for what I believe in, Ms. Labaze for reigniting my love for reading + introducing me to some of my favorite authors, Señora Ortiz for always brightening my day, and all of the other amazing teachers who I have been lucky enough to have.

What are some of the out-of-school time (OST) programs that you participated in between grades 6 - 12?
MIT SEED Academy, SRMP at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Engineering Design Workshop at the Edgerton Center, and Science Club for Girls.

How did being enrolled in any OST program(s) contribute to your success in and out of high school?
There are only so many hours in a school day, and it can be hard to explore all of your interests within them. That is why out of school programs can be so valuable and enriching. It was through these experiences that I figured out what I was passionate about, what I wasn’t so interested in, and what I may want to pursue in college and beyond. These programs also became sources of community and support that I was able to come back to whenever I needed something.

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
The thing I like the most about CRLS is that the students here work tirelessly to improve our school and district, even when there is a considerable amount of pushback. Whether it's writing opinionated articles for The Register Forum or organizing a walkout, students have shown time and time again that they are unafraid to stand up for what they believe in. I only hope that one day students do not need to fight so hard for their views to be heard.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
If you have been looking for a classroom for 10 minutes and still can’t find it, it’s probably in a stairwell.

Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Don’t be afraid to try something new! The opportunities at CRLS are endless in terms of electives, clubs, sports teams, etc. I met some of my closest friends on the freshman soccer team (freshman teams for sports are THE best) and found new hobbies through clubs and electives. Also, don’t join something just because your friends are, seek out experiences that you are genuinely interested in!
