Favorite Class at CRLS
African Literature. There are not really classes here where I, as a black student, can tap into my history and the accomplishments of black people since slavery is usually the topic discussed. African Lit helped me dive into these unknown accomplishments and opened my mind that there are in fact many stories about and by people who look like me.
Favorite Teacher
Sara Reese. Ms. Reese is our step team advisor and the career counselor for the RSTA program. As a student who dropped RSTA after junior year to pursue other courses, Ms. Reese was not obligated to help me navigate my post secondary options but, she did anyway. She acted as another mother figure both in and out of step practice, and she never failed to keep it real with me.
What are some of the out-of-school time (OST) programs that you participated in between grades 6 - 12?
Work Force, Neighborhood Service Project, City Step, Cambridge Recreation, Moses Youth Center, East End House, Science Club for Girls Junior Mentors
How did being enrolled in any OST program(s) contribute to your success in and out of high school?
These programs not only allowed me to create a variety of connections that I would eventually use throughout my high school career, but they also helped me enhance certain skills including public speaking and working with others.
What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
I love the amount of opportunities and resources that Rindge has to offer. There are a lot of things that need to be fixed at this school, but CRLS undoubtedly has something for everyone to do. There are so many clubs, ranging from KPop to Club Med, and this school provides many resources that other schools do not have the luxury of providing.
What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
It is easy to get help. This school consists of more than 200 educators and many of them stay after school for the sole purpose of helping their students. Students have to remember that the teachers work for us, so asking for help when it is needed is vital.
Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Start saving early. Senior year is the most expensive year of high school, as you have to pay a senior fee, prom, the yearbook, sending out college applications, and the SAT if you do not get a fee waiver, and if you decide to go to college that is a whole expense in itself. Saving early and applying to as many scholarships as possible is key and will ultimately save you from loads of stress in the long run.
