9th Grade Activities: March 26 - 27, 2019

Dear Caregivers of 9th Graders,

All 10th grade will be taking the ELA MCAS exam Tuesday, March 26th and Wednesday, March 27th. To help maintain a quiet and organized testing experience for students and to make the day productive for non-testers, we have created alternative activities for 9th, 11th and 12th grade students. Students will be informed about these activities in their Community Meeting. Attendance during these days is mandatory. Please remind your student to bring their fully-charged Chromebook to participate in the event.

Lunch will run from 11:08 - 11:38AM. Beginning at 11:45AM, 9th graders will rotate through 4 rotations over the two days:

Freshmen Technology Experience
Opportunities Panel
Course selection for School Year 2019-2020
Activity with current 9th grade guidance counselor

9th Grade Technology Experience: CRLS 9th graders will be participating in two Computer Science-focused activities, using their school-issued Chromebooks. The first, MIT App Inventor, will teach students how to program Android-based apps, and will be led by the MIT App Inventor team, as well as CRLS Computer Science students. The second, Shadowspect, will challenge students to participate in a 3D-based geometry assessment, and will be led by members of the MIT Playful Journey Lab. Each rotation will end with a discussion about careers in Computer Science. We are hopeful that participating in these experiences will encourage students to enroll in CS classes for next year. Please remind students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook in order to participate in the event.

Please sign the following media release if you wish to give permission for your student to be photographed by a CPS photographer during the event.

Opportunities Panel: During this session, 9th graders will hear from a panel of 11th and 12th grade students about opportunities available to them later in their high school career. Opportunities discussed will include, but are not limited to: AP courses, RSTA co-ops, senior honors thesis, internships, and leadership opportunities.

Please contact your child’s Learning Community office if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Principal Damon Smith
