Favorite Class at CRLS
History is my favorite subject. I like how history explores the intersection of politics, social movements, and economic and cultural trends. The history classes I have taken at CRLS have been some of the best I've had. Particular highlights were Dynamics of the Modern Middle East with Ms. Otty and Comp Government with Dr. Lam.

Favorite Teacher
Ms. Otty, Mr. Weathersby, Mr. Roldan. Since I first took a class with Ms. Otty—her Modern World History class sophomore year—she has challenged me to complicate my understanding of history and pushed me to think more globally. She has helped me learn to be comfortable with the fact that looking back at the past is sometimes messy and unsatisfying and has shown me that accepting this fact is critical to understanding any historical or contemporary issue. As my advisor for my independent study last year, her advice was invaluable and allowed me to really make the most out of my project. Ms. Otty is also just a wonderful person to chat with. She gives fantastic book recommendations!

Shoutout to Mr. Roldan and Mr. Weathersby for answering my one thousand questions about the college process and for never kicking me out of their offices when I asked for multiple meetings in a week. Without Mr. Roldan's optimism and Mr. Weathersby's calmness, navigating the college process would have been significantly more stressful.

What are some of the out-of-school time (OST) programs that you participated in between grades 6 - 12?
None

How did being enrolled in any OST program(s) contribute to your success in and out of high school?
N/A

What did you like most about CRLS? Why?
The commitment that students have to making the CRLS and Cambridge communities more just and equitable. The way that CRLS students are willing to use their voices to advocate for what needs to change locally and globally is inspiring.

What is something people unfamiliar with CRLS should know about the school? Why?
CRLS's student newspaper, The Register Forum, is the longest continually run high school newspaper in the country (it was founded in 1891). The arts program at CRLS is also fantastic—every student should take advantage of it, whether that's by taking a visual arts class or going to our stunning music and theater performances.

Advice to Incoming Freshmen
Invest in making new friends during your freshman and sophomore years. Don't feel like you have to join every single activity or take advantage of every opportunity that CRLS offers—recognize all that is available to you but once you have done that, sit down early on in freshman year and choose a few activities that you want to devote your time throughout high school. That way you feel like you have a plan and can cultivate deep connections to the activities that really matter to you. Even though it's normal for interests to evolve and change over time, try to choose extracurriculars you can see yourself being a part of for your entire four years.
