Green Hero: March/April 2012

The Green Hero Award given every two months is a program of the Cambridge Green Schools Initiative (CGSI), and the honor is given to individuals or groups who are making a significant contribution or impact towards environmental sustainability in the school district. The honor is given by the school department’s Office for Sustainability.

The Green Hero honor for the months of March/April 2012 goes to Amy MacLeod, Integrated Preschool teacher in the Special Start Program at the Tobin School.

“It’s a pleasure to have a dedicated staff member working on the Cambridge Green Schools Initiative (CGSI). Amy has put a lot of time and effort into the start-up of composting at the Tobin School, and this has allowed us to expand composting to yet another school,” said Kristen von Hoffmann, Sustainability Manager for the Cambridge Public School District.

Amy is heading up the new composting program at Tobin, and together with a great team of teachers, parents, custodians, and kitchen staff, Amy is teaching students how to compost in the cafeteria after meals and serving as a point-person in organizing the effort at the school. Through her hard work and dedication, we have been able to expand the composting program of the Cambridge Green Schools Initiative. Thanks Amy!

And, now, in her own words, Tobin Teacher Amy MacLeod:

“Hi and Thank-You for the Green Hero Award. I work in Cambridge as Integrated Preschool teacher in the Special Start Program. My classroom is a blend of children with and without special needs and offers rich and interesting hands-on activities presented in theme-based learning units. This marks my 17th year as a Cambridge teacher!

Throughout my life, I have cared deeply about our beautiful and increasingly fragile environment. I am honored to help foster our students and families at the Tobin to become environmentally conscious citizens both now and in the future. Quite simply, it’s just the right thing to do. GO GREEN, GO CAMBRIDGE! Again, thank-you for such an honor!”
